The catch/throw movement.

In volleyball the catch/throw movement is probably the invention of the century. Because teh transfer from throwing to continious playing is known to be the most difficult step in minivolleyball. The game should not come to a stop and the child should have as many contacts with be ball as possible.
The catch/throw movement is part of level 4 and is a good extension to circulationvolleyball (levels 1 till 3).
With the catch/throw movement the ball is being, after it has been caught, pushed 20 till 50 centimeters to the floor, and than thrown. This all happens in one fluent movement.
  • o         in front of the body
The Ball can be caught:
  • o         above the head
3 SORTS OF CATCH/THROW MOVEMENTS
  1. The frontal catch/throwmovement
The player is facing the place where the ball has to be thrown.
  2. The backwards catch/throwmovement
The player stands with his back to the place where the ball has to be thrown.
  3. De catch/throwmovement played in an angle
When a player plays the ball in an angle to a player to the right of him, he has to make a step with his right foot and turns immediately towards that player while performing the catch/throw movement.  If he want to play to the player on the left of him, he has to make a step with his left foot.

Learningpath of the catch/throw movement

1.     Teaching

  • o         The children are standing in a circle, every child has a ball en throws it up to itself.
Points of meriting attention:
  • o         Push the ball down immediately after catching the ball.
  • o         From the lowest point throw it up immediately.
  • o         After throwing point at the ball.
  • o         Catch the ball with the hands, not with the arms.
  • o         Make sure it is a non-interupted fluent movement.
  • o         Hands on the side or sloping on the ball ( not under the ball ).
Practise: above the head - in front of the body - throwing backwards - in an angle.

2. Accent

Two children have a ball. Let them execute the whole technique and give them one accent on which they should pay attention.

3. Repetition

Make small groups of three children. They have to try to play with more speed without mistakes.
Who makes as first group a serie of twenty good exectutions!!

4. Resistance

The trainer throws difficult balls, which after movement have to be played.
a. forewards

Number 1 runs towards the ball and throws it immediate to number 3.
Number 3 gives the ball to the coach and joins behind number 2.
Number 1 becomes number 4; number 4 becomes 3, and so on.
b. backwards

Number 1 runs towards the ball and plays backward to number 4.
Number 1 joins behind number 3.
Number 4 walks with the ball to the serve-line and bounces the ball to the coach,
after that he joins behind number.
Number 2 becomes number 1.

c. in an angle
First in an sharpe angle, than in a rectangular angle and than in a rectangular angle....backwards.

  1. Coach throws the ball to number 1, he steps with his right foot, turns and throws the ball to number 2.
Number 2 brings the ball to the coach.
  2. After that towards the other side and a step with the left foot.
  3. Throw the ball a little further from the net and the sidelines.

5. Game-like

We now try it with a net and lines.

  1. The coach throws ten ball to the passer (1). He passes these balls to the setter (2), who plays thes balls with the catch/throw movement to the attacker (3). Remember...step right and turn towards the attacker. The attacker playes the bal with an overhead pass over the net.
  2. The coach throws ten ball to the passer (1). Now the attacker is at the right-front, this means that the setter has to make a step with his left foot.
  3. Next, the setter plays the ball backwards to the attacker.

6. Teamplay

We finish with the whole game at competition-level. Four against four.
